As part of the implementation of the Stabilization and Immediate Recovery Program in the Province of Cabo Delgado, displaced and hosting families in the Pemba District received fishing supplies and certificates.
The delivery ceremony took place on Thursday, July 25, 2024, in the City of Pemba, and was led by the Provincial Governor, Valige Tauabo.
The supplies consist of 100 fishing kits, an equal number of preservation, processing, and marketing kits for fish, as well as 20 boat engines.
In his speech following the distribution of the supplies, the Provincial Governor explained that this action aims to ensure the resumption of fishing activities for families affected by terrorism in the Palma, Mocimboa da Praia, Macomia, Quissanga, and Pemba districts.
At the same event, fishermen who received training in fish processing were awarded participation certificates.
Samuel Akera, representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), reiterated his organization’s commitment to continue providing multifaceted support to the province’s stabilization and immediate recovery program.
Siricate Selemane, President of the Community Fishing Center, speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, expressed gratitude for the support, highlighting the government’s and cooperation partners’ efforts, which translate not only into the provision of fishing materials but also into improving living conditions and income for families.
The Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture Census conducted in 2022 indicates that Cabo Delgado has 91 Fishing Centers, with a total of 30,625 fishermen, 3,825 boats, and 8,673 fishing tools.
