The Pemba Bulk Terminal (PBT) logistics base is strengthening its support for oil and gas industry operations in Cabo Delgado, with the company preparing to expand its activities to meet growing demand. Between January and July this year, the terminal handled more than 620,000 tonnes of materials destined, among other locations, for the Afungi Peninsula in Palma district.
The development was highlighted by Cabo Delgado Secretary of State Plácido Pereira during a visit to the facility, accompanied by Italy’s ambassador to Mozambique, Gabriele Annis.
According to Plácido Pereira, the existence of a logistics base in Pemba makes it possible to meet the needs of energy projects and helps boost the provincial economy.
PBT, operated by Italian company Renco, currently makes between seven and 12 trips per week to Afungi, transporting equipment, food and vehicles to support operations in the area.
The company plans to increase the capacity of its port operations to keep pace with growing demand.
Plácido Pereira also highlighted local production of equipment for the energy industry as one of the significant changes. According to the Secretary of State, some equipment that was previously manufactured in Egypt to supply operations in Palma will now be produced in Pemba by the company.
PBT’s expansion comes amid the resumption and strengthening of logistics operations associated with liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects in the Palma area. The company says the increased capacity will enable it to meet growing demand for transport and cargo-handling services for projects operating in the province.
